1.5: The Dialogue Update!

Long time no see, huh? I finally had the time and resources to continue working on the game! Compared to the bug fixes from before, this update is pretty big.

If you ever got to play the game in person, you would know that my least favorite part was the conversation mechanic. It wasn't horrible, as it was able to do what it set out do. However, as soon as you clicked on a button you would be kicked out of the conversation. No player feedback- no clue of if you did things right. I found players game over- again and again- on boss encounters because of how basic the system was.

I am proud to announce that I have changed that!

So, what's new?

  • Whenever you pick an emotion in an encounter, you will see how Emma reacts as well as how many points get added to the stimulation meter. With four buttons per encounter, this means there are over 36 unique dialogue options!
    • For boss encounters, you will only see the reaction if you press a button that doesn't align with how Emma feels. This is still a game, after all.

ConversationAftermath

  • There are now overstimulated variants for each boss. You'll encounter them if you get to the last encounter with a high enough meter.
  • The points awarded in encounters are more dynamic now, too. There is no longer a "right" or "wrong" option: just different degrees of punishment.
  • The house level has been completely overhauled, swapping text plastered on the walls for a functional tutorial.
    • It is now impossible to game over in the first room.
    • If you want to play the level without the tutorial, that option has been added as well.

Any other improvements?

  • Bug fix: If you entered a conversation while in the middle of a destimulation animation, the meter would unfreeze. This would allow players to game over while reading text.
  • General improvements made to the stimulation meter.
  • Typos fixed in the tutorial level.
  • Game updates will finally use a proper numbering scheme. This makes the previous update 1.4, and this update 1.5.

What's next?

I am sure players have seen the map includes four buttons, even though they can only click two.  My next goal is to get another level up and running! I also want to update all of my old dialogue sprites to match the style of the new ones. I'll post an update soon going into more detail about what everyone can expect.
